- Cells, Tissues and Organs
- Cells
- The basic building blocks of all living things.
- Animal Cell:
- Cytoplasm-Where chemical reactions take place. Controlled by enzymes.
- Nucleus-Controls the activities of the cell.
- Cell membrane-Controls what goes in and out of the cell. Semi- permeable.
- Mitochondria-Energy is released and created here and then used for respiration.
- Ribosomes-Protein synthesis happens here. Proteins needed are made here.
- Plant Cells contain everything an animal cell has, with a few extra things.
- Cell Wall-Made of cellulose which strengthens the cell.
- Large Vacuole-Contains cell sap to help support the cell.
- Chloroplasts (containing chlorophyll)-Needed for photosynthesis.
- Tissues
- Animal Tissues:
- Muscular Tissue- Contracts to bring about movement
- Glandular Tissue- Produces and releases liquids such as enzymes, hormones etc
- Epithelial Tissue-Covers surfaces and lines tubes
- Plant Tissues:
- Epidermal Tissue-Protects from pathogens but transparent to light
- Photosynthetic Tissue-Contains chloroplasts
- Xylem and Phloem- Transport sugars and water
- Animal Tissues:
- Organs
- A group of tissues performing a specific function
- For example, the heart, liver and eye are all organs
- When grouped together, organs form organ systems.
- A group of tissues performing a specific function
- Cells
