- capillaries are really tiny
- then carry the blood really close to every cell in the body to exchange substances with them
- they have gaps in their walls so substances can diffuse in and out of cells
- they supply food and oxygen and they take away waste
- their walls are usually one cell thick, this means that diffusion is very fast because there is only a short distance for molecules to travel
