  • C8 ACIDS AND ALKALIS
    • Acids and Bases
      • Acids and bases - different substances different ph values
      • acid ph less than 7. all acids can ionise in water. neutral substance has ph 7.
      • Bases react with acid. form hydroxide ions in water. an alkali is a base that is soluble in water. alkalis have a ph of more than 7
      • indicator is a dye that changes colour depending on whether its above or below a certain ph.
      • Litmus red in acidic solutions , purple in neutral solutions and blue in alkaline solutions
      • Methyl orange is red in acidic solutions and yellow in neutral and alkaline solutions.
      • phenolphthalein is colourles in acidic or neutral solutions and pink in alkaline solutions
      • Neutralisation
        • reaction between an acid and a base is called neutralisation. produces a salt and water. the products are neutral. at ph 7 concentration of hydrogen ions is the same as the concentration of hydroxide ions.
          • acids and bases react and form salt and water. salt is a ionic compound.
            • test for hydrogen using lighted splint. Hydrogen makes a squeaky pop with a lighted splint.
        • test for carbon dioxide using limewater. Bubble the gas through limewater. if its is carbon dioxide the limewater will turn cloudy.
        • Soluble salts can be made by reacting an acid with an alki. The alkali is soluble , so no solid will be left at the bottom when all the acid has reacted and the reaction has stopped. harder to make sure correct amount of alkali is added and to get correct amount you need to do a titration. titration is when you add one solution to the other bit by bit.
          • To make an insoluble salt you can use a precipitation reaction. need to react two soluble salts with each other. need a soluble salt containing the poitive ion and a one that contains a negative ion.
