  • Arguments for paedobaptism
    • Baptism as a sacrament
      • Baptism is a sacrament, meaning it imparts God's spiritual grace, in this case through the symbolism of water and words
      • This means that a baby can receive baptism, as the key effect of changing the the soul is dependent not on their actions but on God's grace
    • Baptism as mystery
      • Human beings cannot understand God, as God is too complex for the human mind to grasp
      • Anyone can be baptised regardless of understanding, as God's grace cannot and will never  be understood by anyone
    • Baptism as remedy for original sin
      • Catholics believe in original sin because of break with God caused by sin of Adam and Eve
      • Babies need to be baptised therefore to cleanse themselves from original sin in case they die before they're old enough to profess faith for themselves
    • Baptism as start of Christian life
      • the Church will ensure that baptised children will be brought up as members of the Church community
      • They will be taught what is right from wrong, and learn how to live a Christian life following the teachings of Jesus
      • They will attend church regularly and learn about teachings of the Church, so that they will be ready to confirm their baptismal commitment by being confirmed as adult members of the Church
    • Jesus' teaching about children
      • Luke 18:15 used as justification for baptism
      • If Jesus was happy for mothers to bring infants to him for blessings, the Church should welcome babies for baptism in same way
    • Baptism in Early Church
      • Acts tells story of spread of Early Church, including several households baptised together - likely the households included infants
