  • Alternative arrangements of family living
    • The Nayar Tribe (Southwest India)
      • A woman can have multiple sexual partners
      • Biological father is uncertain
      • Mother's brother is responsible for looking after mother and children
      • No direct link between biological parents living together or being responsible for child bearing
    • Communes (Western Europe and USA)
      • Developed in 1960s
      • Collective living rather than individual family units
      • Responsibility of the group to raise children rather than natural parents
      • The Kibbutz (example of commune)
        • Parents separated from their children and they were brought up by someone else with limited access
        • They were seen as children of the Kibbutz and were the responsibility of the whole community
    • Banaro Tribe (New Guinea)
      • Husband of the Banaro tribe will not have sex with his wife until she has a child with a friend of her father-in-law's
        • This is to test if the wife can have children, although if she can't the husband can get rid of her
    • Single Parenthood
      • Rapoports argues that:
        • 1)Single parent families are an important 'emerging form' of the family
        • 2) Single parent families are now becoming a legitimate alternative to other family structures
    • Gay and Lesbian Households
      • Have become more popular since the 1980s
      • The Civil Partnership Act of 2004 gave legal recognition so couples had the same legal treatment as a marriage
      • Same sex marriage was introduced in 2014
    • Foster care and children's homes
      • This demonstrates that the link between natural parents and raising of children can be and sometimes is seperated
