- Eldest son of Nicholas I and Charlotte of Prussia.
- Had seven children, Alexander III was second son (first died)
- Educated at St Petersburg
- Travelled quite extensively - for control and to implement reforms to accommodatenature of Empire
- Steered Russia through turbulent times - unrest that followed after Crimean War
- Notable for emancipation of surfs, reforming several parts of Russian state and surviving all but one of many assassination attempts
