  • action potential B3
    • Step one: When the neuron is at rest, it is at -70 mV.
      • The inside of the cell is very negative. This is because there is more positive  sodium ions  outside than in the cell.
      • Sodium/ Potassium pump- uses ATP to transport sodium and potassium ions across it's membrane
      • Sodium channels are closed
    • Step two: The nerve impulseis stimulated by a receptor cell or another neuron.
      • This is all due to a stimulus
    • Step 4: +40 sodium channels close, K open. K ions diffuse out.
    • Step five: Hyper -polarisation
      • Potassium channels close more slowly than sodium channels.
        • Excess potassium ions diffuse out
      • Potential difference more negative than resting potneial
    • Step 6: re polarisation -
      • resting potential restored
      • K moves back into cell though non voltage K channels
