    • Reduced Absorption of Nutrients
      • Caused by:
        • reduced production of gastric hydrochloric acid
          • prevents the breakdown of proteins, fats and carbs
        • deterioration of the function of the digestive organs and lining
      • Effects
        • vitamin D - increased risk of osteoporosis, cancer and diabetes
        • calcium - causes bone loss and increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures
        • magnesium - impacts on the immune system and function of the heart
    • Dementia and Alzheimer's
      • Risk Factors
        • a stroke - brain's blood supply is restricted, causing loss of brain cells
        • lifestyle factors - e.g. smoking, lack of exercise/poor diet
        • age
      • Effects of Alzheimer's
        • Early Stage - decline in STM, impairment in thinking and problem solving
        • Later Stage - language impairment, lack of judgement, emotional outbursts, changes in behaviour
        • Final Stage - no recognition of family members, unable to care for self, almost total loss of memory, and death
      • Support Needed for Alzheimer's
        • Early Stage - medication, counselling, memory clinics
        • Later Stage - respite care, medication, support with personal care
        • Final Stage - residential care, personal care, end-of-life care
