  • Abortions
    • The 1967 Act says that in the UK, abortion is only allowed if two doctors agree that:
      • The Mother's life is at risk
      • The Mother's mental or physical health is at risk
      • The child is very likely to be born severely handicapped
      • There would be a serious effect on other children in the family
    • The 1990 Act states that they cannot be carried out after 24 weeks unless the mother's life is at risk or the foetus is likely to be born with severe mental or physical abnormalities
    • People who argue about abortion often argue about when life begins
      • Some say it is when the egg is fertilized
      • Other say when it receives a soul (15 weeks)
      • Other say when the foetus can survive outside the womb
      • Many non-religious people believe a woman should have the right to do what she wants with her own body
      • Religious people believe the unborn child's rights are equivalent to those of the mother and that both the father and the unborn child have claim on the mother's body
      • Foetuses born at 22-24 weeks can now survive so the time limit on abortions should be reduced to 18-20 weeks
      • Medical staff should not be made to act against their conscience  whilst others argue that is just a medical procedure
