Human factors in a disaster

Human factors in disasters:

  • Urbanisation - development of squatter settlements on areas at risk of landslides and flooding.
  • Rapid Population Growth - more people in high risk areas
    - more vulnerable people e.g. elderly/very young
  • Deforestation and Land Degradation - causing flooding, soil erosion, desertification
  • Poverty and Politics - lack of technology - can't build earthquake proof buildings
    - lack of money - can't prepare for emergency
    - corrupt government - misuse resources and/or prevent aid
    - difficult to get to remote areas - poor infrastructure e.g. roads
