Skeletal system glossary

Axial skeleton:
Made up of the central parts providing support. This includes the cranium, vertebras, ribs and the sternum

Appendicular skeleton:
The remaining bones in your body e.g.: arms, shoulder, legs and hips

Flexion:
A decrease in the angle around the joint (bending your arm or knees)

Extension:
When the angle of the articulating bone increases (stretching you arm or knees)

Abduction:
Movement away from the midline of the body (moving your arms outwards)

Adduction:
Movement towards the midline of the body (moving you arms inwards)

Rotation:
Movement around limb's long axis
7 of 8
Circumduction:
A combination of flexion, extension, abduction, adduction and rotation e.g. open the gates
