Food and fuel shortages, German money lost its value, their potato crop failed and 6 million soldiers were killed or wounded.

He had to leave the country as the victorious allies would not deal with him.

A new government as set up, what was it called?
The Weimar Republic

What was the Weimars constitution?
It was democratic, where the people voted for their leaders. It had a president, the first was called Ebert. It also had a chancellor which was the head of the government and it had a Reichstag(parliament) which was voted for by the people.

Why was the government unstable?
It was unstable because of its voting system- Proportional Representation as this meant that to form a government a political party needed 50% of the vote, which was pretty much impossible.

What did parties do to form a government?
To form a givernment, parties had to work hard together in what was called coalition governments

What was wrong with coalition governments?
The parties would fall out all the time and so this meant the governments would change all the time.

What is article 48?
Article 48 was a rule which allowed the president to make laws on his own in an emergency.

What was bad about article 48?
The president got to decide what was an emergency. so the president could act as a dictator.

They were defeated by ex-soldiers called the free corps which were a volunteer army.
