  • Geography - Rivers and coast
    • Rivers
      • The hydrological cycle/water cycle
        • Precipitation - All water released from clouds e.g. rain, snow, hail, sleet and fog
        • Surface runoff - Water flowing across the surface. The water maybe in a channel e.g. a river or stream
        • Interception - When water collects on objects e.g. leaves and roots.
        • Infiltration - When water soaks into soil.
        • Throughflow - When water soaks into the soil and seeps towards a river or the sea.
        • Percolation - The downwards movement of water from soils to rocks.
        • Groundwater flow -  The movement of water through the water table. Which is stored underground.
        • Evaporation - When water is heated by the sun becomes vapour.
        • Transpiration - When water evaporates from leaves to the atmosphere.
        • Evapotranspiration - The term for both evaporation and transpiration.
        • Condensation - When water vapour is cooled and turns into water vapour.
        • Water table - The upper level of saturated ground.
      • The drainage basin
        • The drainage basin is the area of land drained by a river and its tributaries. E.g. Nile and Mississipi.
        • The boundary of the drainage basin is called the WATERSHED.
