It has rose from 38 million in 1901 to 67 million in 2007.

In the 1900s it was four or five children and in 2008 it is approximately 2 children.

In 1931 only 7% of the population was over 65 and 24% were under 16. In 2012, the ratio is respectively similar at 16-17%.

Moved from manufacturing and mining towns particularly in the north of England. This is transformed to a service industry mainly. There has also been a trend of counter-urbanisation.

They contribute £40 billion extra to the economy than they receive from state pensions etc.

Benefits of the greying population (+)
+ Grey pound (positive multiplier effect and voluntary work), personal pensions (less pressure on state), over 65 work (more experienced and increased tax) and age specific products (more market,e.g. SAGA holiday).

Challenges of the greying population (-)
- Taxation will increase (due to the pressure on the state pension), rise in retirement age (young people may resist), NHS costs for the over 85s-more dependent: increase in chronic and brain degenerative diseases,e.g. Alzheimer's.

-Single person households: young people are less likely to get on the property ladder and if they do high prices. Pressure on greenfield sites.
