A metropolitan area with a total population in excess of 10 million people. There are also usually over 2,000 people/km² (e.g New York)

Definition of a world city
A city that acts as a major centre for finance, trade, business, politics, science, information gathering and diffusion, mass media and the associated activities. A world city doesn't just serve a nation or region but the whole world. (e.g London)

Definition of a millionaire city
A city with over 1 million inhabitants (e.g Birmingham)

Definition of urbanisation
The growth in the proportion of a country's population that lives in urban areas as apposed to rural areas. (Not the process of rural-urban migration)

Definition of globalisation
Increasing economic integration of countries, especially in terms of trade and the movement of capital.

Definition of suburbanisation
The process of population movement from the central areas of cities towards the suburbs on the outskirts of the rural-urban fringe.

Definition of counter-urbanisation
The process in which the population of cities actually falls as people move out beyond the rural-urban fringe into truly rural areas.

Definition of re-urbanisation
The movement of people back to live in old city centres which have been redeveloped. (Or gentrified)

The improvement of housing in an area that was formerly poor and run down. (e.g Notting Hill)
