Identify the natural hazards in a local area
East Midlands Floods (2007) 3000 homes flooded, Gotham tornado (1984) Snow (March 2013)
1 of 19
What are the details on landslides?
7th biggest killer, occur on mountains after periods of heavy rain, human factors affect it- deforestation and building on slopes
2 of 19
What are the details on droughts
When a place have 50% less water than average over three months, 1/3 of the world surface is suffering from drought.
3 of 19
What are the details on floods?
33% of the world's surface , common causes are rain, cyclones, monsoons, snow melt and el nino.

Local flood case study
6th July 2012 major roads were blocked by water (A52), East midlands trains from Nottingham to Skegness were halted due to a landslide, by 3 in the afternoon 30mm of rain had fallen which is half of the average monthly rainfall in the county.

What natural hazards is the Philippines at risk from?
Earthquakes, floods, droughts, landslides, volcano eruptions.

What natural hazards is California at risk from?
earthquakes, river floods, drought, wildfires, fog and landslides

Statistics on the Philippines
7000 islands, 2000 inhabited meanwhile 2500 aren't even named. has 37 volcanoes 18 of which are active. Philippine plate subducts the eurasian plate. In 1990 there was an earthquake that measured 7.7 and was responsible for 1600 deaths.

How do ice cores provide evidence of climate change?
bubbles of air that are trapped in ice provide evidence in changes of CO2. They record over the last 800000yrs but are indirect.
9 of 19
How can a pollen analysis provide evidence of climate change?
Pollen taken from peat bogs and lake beds show how plants have changed, indirect but combined with other things this is good.
10 of 19
What are the natural causes of climate change?
Solar energy varies, volcanic activity can block out sun and cause cosmic collisions, milankovic cycles, natural greenhouse effect.
11 of 19
What are the human causes of climate change?
Atmospheric forcing, enhanced greenhouse effect, global dimming caused by soot and vapour in the atmosphere blocks out sun and burning fossil fuels
12 of 19
What are the 6 feedback processes linked with the tipping point?
1) Albedo 2) water vapor trapping heat/reflecting it 3) acid ocean as plankton can't cope 4) ecosystems give out more CO2 and become less effective 5) ocean releases CO2 as it warms 6) permafrost melts releasing methane

What are the environmental impacts of climate change on Africa?
Desertification, unpredictable rainfall, deforestation along coast, sea level rise (west coast) cyclones in madagascar
14 of 19
What are the social impacts of climate change on africa?
18m affected by hunger, 200000 child death, 1m children are at risk from malnutrition, malaria, poverty, food + water insecurity
15 of 19
what are the economic impacts of climate change on africa?
shock rise in food prices, infrastructure disintegrates
16 of 19
What are the social impacts of global warming on the arctic?
indigenous people wont b able to live in where they have been, they'll lose their culture (hunting) people getting more skin cancer
17 of 19
What are the economic impacts of global warming in the arctic?
Faster trade links over the arctic ocean, increased pollution and land use
18 of 19
what are the environmental impacts of global warming on the arctic?
extinct animals, fishing changes, can't hunt on ice, new ecosystems as permafrost melts, less traditional coastal erosion
