Verb
A verb is an action word. A word used to describe an action, condition or experience , and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence, such as hear, become or happen.

Adverb
An adverb is a word that describes, or modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. A lot of adverbs, but not all, usually end in "ly". So happily and madly would be adverbs.

Noun
A noun is a person, place or thing, e.g. (girl,dog,mom)

Adjective
An adjective is a descriptive word that describes a noun e.g. (pretty, happy, silly, sunny) e.g. that is a pretty woman.

Pathetic Fallacy
Using the weather to describe the mood. Thunder is usually associated with the arrival of the witches.

A symbol that represents a wider theme e.g. dagger symbolises betrayal, blood symbolises guilt.

The use of ordinary speech. Mainly used by minor characters.

The admiration of masculine qualities such as violence and power.

Chain of being
The natural order of things: e.g. God, then kings, then people, then animals.

Hinting at future events. Macbeth does a lot of this in his soliloquies

A central theme in Dickens' work. The idea that anyone can repent their sins and become a better person

Omniscient narrator
A third person "birds eye" perspective.

The point at which a character realises the 'truth' of a situation and changes e.g when Scrooge visits his own grave.

Dickens wanted his readers to change their attitudes towards the poor.

Religious beliefs
Both texts, Macbeth and A Christmas Carol, would have had readers and audiences with strong Christian beliefs.
