Hardwood
Come from deciduous tree's (broad leaf trees) E.g. ash, beech, mahogany. They come in a wide range of colours. Grains are closer together because they are denser woods.

Softwood
They grow quickly and are a managed suitable resource. They are normally pale in colour, not as durable as hardwoods but strong grained. There is also significant knotting in the wood.

Plywood
Layers of veneer glued at 90°c to each other (always). Used in construction and making furniture. It has an excellent weight to strength ration.

Chipboard
Made of small chips of wood with resin. Used with other surface finishes and is also used in carcus construction. It's poor when it is exposed to moisture.

Blockboard
A core of softwood block/strips with a plywood cover. E.g. panel doors.

Hardboard
Wood fibres have been compressed, little structure integrity. Normally on the back of wardrobes.

MDF
Composed of fine wood dust and resin. Flat-pack furniture finishes equally well on all surfaces.
