What were the Roman attitudes to marriage?
Marriage was needed to provide families with a male heir, just like the Greeks

In the bottom class, it was the parents that chose the husband, as well as the upper classes. But in later years, women were allowed to decide for themselves.

The wife remained under the authority of her father. If a woman had to be under someone’s control, a doting father living in another house was a much better bet than a husband.

They would be likely to work well, and any children meant additional slaves, but this depended on the master' wishes.
