Male mortality higher in childhood, so more girls lived. many marriageable men migrated to empire. living costs higher, men wanted to be able to support a woman before marrying her.

that men and woman could occupy seperate different spheres within society, men at the workplace, woman in the home.

dressmakers, domestic servants, milliners, governesses. If you did it showed your family had fallen on hard times, and you were not full-filling your role of angel in the house and was not a lady.

1864, applied to specific naval ports and garrison towns. police could arrest prostitutes, and give an internal examination. if infected detained until cured, if she refuses she is thrown into jail and had to prove virtuous to a court.
