what can you find out from mass spec?
atomic mass of elements, relative abundance of isotopes in an element.
1 of 7
what can you assume the m/z value is equal to?
the molecular mass of th ion causing the peak
2 of 7
what is the molecular ion (M+)?
heaviest ion, with just one electron removed. Tells the chemist what the molecular mass of the compound is
3 of 7
why are there peaks below the M+ peak?
becuase it fragments
4 of 7
what's the fragmentation pattern?
the way a parent ion breaks down is characteristi of the compound.
5 of 7
what is the base peak?
most abundant ion
6 of 7
why is there sometimes a small M+1 peak?
if a compund has incorporated a C13
