What is a network?
A network is a series of computers and other devices that are connected together and can share data and resources
1 of 21
What is a switch?
Smart multi-plug adaptor that only sends packets to the intended recipient, using their destination MAC address
2 of 21
What is a router?
Sends data packets on their way in the best direction
3 of 21
What is packet switching?
Packet switching is when the message is split in many different parts and is sent separetely depending on the fastest route for each package. Then the package is reassembled at its destination.
4 of 21
What happens to packages that are corrupt?
Each packet is checked for errors and if there are any, then it requests for it to be resent.
5 of 21
What is a wide area network (WAN)?
Any network in which the computers communicate using resources supplied by a “third party carrier” such as British Telecom
6 of 21
Breifly describe circuit switching.
When you make a telephone call, a dedicated connection is set up between you and the person you are calling for the duration of the call. This is called circuit switching.
7 of 21
What is a data packet marked with?
The packet number and the total number of packets in the transmission.
8 of 21
What happens to packets that are lost?
If any packets are not acknowledged after a certain time, they are automatically resent.
9 of 21
What passes a packet across the network?
This is the job of a router.
10 of 21
What does the Domain Name System do?
It allows you to type in a website name and it then translates it into an IP address. e.g www.google.com is translated to 74.125.131.94
11 of 21
What is a DNS 'root' server?
13 of thses around the worl record all the names and IP addresses on the internet.
12 of 21
How are IP addresses used to send data packets?
The data pscket needs two IP addresses. The one its being sent from and its destination.
13 of 21
What is a MAC address?
A Media Access Control is assigned to an NIC by the manufacturer for either bluetooth, wifi or Ethernet depending on if its a computer or a mobile phone.
14 of 21
What is a Network Interface Card (NIC)?
It's built into every networked device. It can be wired or wireless.
15 of 21
What Network Hardware is needed to connecta standalone computer to a LAN?
An NIC, router or switch and a modem might also be needed.
16 of 21
What does Wifi actually represent?
Wifi is a trademark that represents Wireless LAN or WLAN
17 of 21
What are some benefits of Wired networks?
Faster connection, Higher bandwidth, Greater security.
18 of 21
What are some risks of wired networks?
Cables can be hazardous and unsightly, not all devices can connect via cables, can be expensive to set up.
19 of 21
What are some benefits of Wireless networks?
No wires, eaasy to connect new devices, can be used freely within range.
20 of 21
What are some risks of Wireless networks?
Connecion can be slower, Could be interference from walls and other electronic devices, Less secure.
