Why was the Liberal party divided in the period 1928-22?

Social Reform
LG had promised a country fit for heroes to live in which meant high expectations. BUT radical politics could not be introduced due to economic problems. Unemployement not dealt with. Liberals displeased about coalition pressures.

Slump of 1920's- due to high inflation and lack of money abroad for exports. British industries facing competition. Coalition did not interfere with the economy. LG decided Geddes axe. Didn't deal with tarrifs or inflation.

Pre-war conflicts between trade unions and employers. Rise in employment provoked militancy and strikes. Partial sucsess (LG'S handling of strikes increases militancy e.g. use of more police) The uncompetitive nature of british industry was not gone

Long standing desire of catholics for independance. Increased violence. 1920-21 The south became independant from the north. This increased conservative concerns at LG's actions.

Coalition government- conservative majority with a liberal leader. Conservatives could have fought the 1918 election alone is LG wasn't so popular. The increase in government control undermine liberal values. LG had no independant power.
