What are the products of oxidation of a primary alcohol?
An aldehyde, with no excess oxidising agent & no reflux - or carboxylic acid with excess oxidising agent under reflux
2 of 15
What are the products of oxidation of a secondary alcohol?
A ketone, with no further products due to excess oxidising agent
3 of 15
What are the products of oxidation of a tertiary alcohol?
They do not oxidise.
4 of 15
What can't tertiary alcohols be oxidised?
They do not have a hydrogen atom attached to the carbon atom where the -OH group is found.
5 of 15
What does heating under reflux involve?
Heating and vapourising a liquid, with the vapour condensing and returning to the reaction mixture.
6 of 15
What is the difference between an aldehyde and ketone?
An aldehyde has a double bonded =O at the end of the chain, whereas the ketone doesn't.
7 of 15
What are the conditions for the dehydration of alcohols?
Heated alumina catalyst, at 300 degrees C - or reflux with concentrated sulfuric acid.
8 of 15
What is a substitution reaction?
It is an alcohol reacting with halide ions to produce a haloalkane, in the presence of a strong acid
9 of 15
What are the two methods of turning an alcohol into an ester?
Esterification with carboxylic acid, or esterification with an acid anhydride.
10 of 15
How does esterification occur with an acid anhydride?
Acid anhydrides are more reactive, and react to produce a carboxylic acid and an ester with a higher yield.

What is the functional group of carboxylic acids?
-COOH
13 of 15
Where can an -OH group occur?
1. As part of carboxyl groups in carboxylic acids 2. Attached to an alkane chain 3. Attached to benzene ring in phenols
14 of 15
What is the order of acid strength?
ethanol < water < phenols < carboxylic acids
