Where is the first area of issue?
Southern England, 2007.
1 of 12
What are 2 natural causes?
Areas of prolonged convectional rainfall due to active jet-stream, small steep basins in which run-off and overland flow are rapid.
2 of 12
What are 3 human causes?
Victorian dam cracked near Ulley (Rotherham), impermiable surfaces cause more surface run-off and a lower lag-time, increase in arable farming encouraging farmers to ***** land of vegetation.
3 of 12
What are the social impacts?
hundreds evacuated after landslides, Worcester 100-150 properties flooded, traffic delayed, Mythe water treatment plant flooded.
4 of 12
What are the economic impacts?
£6 billion in property damage (£30 million in Sheffield, United kassam stadium £43 million in damage), properties decreasing in price, businesses close (poor local economy).
5 of 12
What are the environmental impacts?
Lakes contaminated with filthy water and sewage and drain refuse, large areas of farmland rendered useless, natural wetlands flooded.
6 of 12
What is the second area of issue?
Bangledesh
7 of 12
What are 2 natural causes?
Monsoon rainfall (500mm a day sometimes), 3 large rivers Ganges, Brahmaputra, Meghna
8 of 12
What are 3 human causes?
Rapidly increasing population of 150 million x3 since 1960 (increased urban areas), agricultural activities upstream have caused high silt content, deforestation of Himalayas reduces interception.
9 of 12
What are the social impacts?
Erosion and flooding of marginal lands (chars) cause people to move to Dhaka (10.5 million people were displaced in 2007), loss of agricultural land lack of food, death (200,000 in 1970), dead bodies also contributed to water borne deseises.
10 of 12
What are the economic impacts?
2.2 million acres of damaged crop-land (rice crop destroyed twice in one year,$290 million), the main highway connecting Dhaka to the rest of the country was flooded isolating the capital, over 50,000 private businesses in Dhaka lost.
11 of 12
Environmental impacts?
38% of the total land area was flooded including 800,000 ha of agricultural land, water contamination as open sewage leaked, bank erosion (thousands of chars disappeared within weeks).
