Welfare State
A system whereby the state undertakes to protect the health and well-being of its citizens, especially those in financial or social need, by means of grants, pensions, and other benefits.

Beveridge Five Giants
Want - no money tackled by the benefit system, Disease - tackled by the NHS, Idleness - laziness tackled by job centres, Ignorance - uneducated tackled by free education 3-18 years old, Squalor - poor housing tackled by council housing.

Marxist Approach
Attempts to make a system based on inequality and exploitation seem fair (social control), keeping the labour force health and efficient benefits the capitalist class.

Social Democratic Approach
Believes that the government should be responsible for social welfare for everyone and benefits should be available to all. social inequality threatens the stability of society therefore wealth and income should be redistributed by progressive TAX.

Feminist Approach
The founding principal is based on that men provide for women and emphasises the way it supports patriarchy and the inadequacy of meeting women needs.

New Right Approach
Welfare state should be rolled back as welfare services are better quality when not provided by the state. Agree with means testing - benefits should only be provided to the most unable. Murray- welfare state has created a dependency culture.

Marketisation
Refers to the process of introducing market forces of consumer choice and competition between suppliers into areas run by the state, such as education.

Privatisation
Any process that reduces the involvement of the state or public sector in economic activities of a nation.

Benefit sanctions
When you receive benefits, you have to sign an agreement to do things such as apply for a job or go to interviews, to keep getting them. However if you don’t full fill the agreement, they maybe temporarily stopped or reduced.

Workers and Shirkers
Shirker - a person who evades work, duty, responsibility, etc. (opposite of a worker)

Hand Up Not A Hand Out
Helping a person out of a difficult time rather than giving it all to them without any effort needed

Inverse Care Law
Suggests that those in the greatest need of help from the welfare state get the fewest resources whilst those who need it the least get the most resources.

Austerity
Austerity involves policies to reduce government spending and or higher taxes in order to try and reduce government budget deficits.

The Big Society
Government would encourage volunteering and involvement in society and support the creation co-operatives, charities and social enterprises. However, the big society had not reached those who need the most, and now are more divided than before.

New Right and Conservative Government 1979-1997 - Thatcher and Major
Nanny state - infantilise people taking away their capacity of self-reliance and self-responsibility. Council House Tenants. Means-tested benefits. Private NHS.

"Late modernity" -restructure labour market. Globalisation - privatised future. Generous benefits. Promoting opportunity.

Minimum wage and working families tax credit, child tax , working tax credit all to boost up low wages. NHS Sure Start Academy - child care support to help parents and give children the best 'start' in life.

Reorganised NHS. Free schools, cut social housing. Introductions of financial penalties (housing Benefits, Bedroom tax). Universal benefit.
