What is the internet?
A global communications system - links computers in geographically different loctions- through variety of telecommunications (e.g telephone lines/satellites)

Allows for fast communications between computers/otherdevices - allows transfer of data between computer & distribaution of information

How can computers be linked?
Any computer linkedto the internet can be linked to another by having common technical standards (common identification system for computers & common referance system for data files)

A collection of information - in multimedia form - stored in websites as web pages

A uniform resource locater - a unique address for referring to resources on the internet

Hypertexttransfer protocol - process that defines process if identifying, requesting & transferring multimedia page over the internet

Internet Protocol Address - uniquly uidentifies the physical computer linked to the internet

The application running on a users computer that is responible for requesting the text & graphics of webpages frominternet servers & assembling them for display (e.g. internet explorer, firefox, google chrome, safari)

provides internet pge for othercomputers throught the internet - often provides cache of webpages

Web hosting?
a type of internet hosting that allows website to be accessed via the world wide web

FTP?
file transfer protocol - commonest protocol for transfer of files across the internet - when a user downloads files through FTP they're given freer acces to the file server than to a web server.

ISP?
internet service provider - an organisationthat has directlinks to the internet & accepts tranmissions from users over dial-up/broadband connections, & passes these onto the internet

Search Engine?
an application accessedoverthe internet that maintains the indexes of webpages - user wanting ifo. on a particular topic will access the serach engine using the internet & submit a topic/list of topics

Cache?
a store of recently accessed webpages & the image they contain,kept bya browser - if a user visits a page that is already storedin the cache,it can be loaded from the local copy, without needing to access the internet(more efficent)

Cookies?
smallfiles placed on computers HD by a visited website - upon returned visit personal information they have alreadyenteredc will not be requested again

Portal?
a website designed to be the one that the user will want to visit forst when accessing the webpage(obvious commericail advantages)

collection of web pages at the same domain,often witha common theme, usually maintained be a single indiviual/organisation.

Webpage?
a 'document' accessed in a browser - cntains text & graphics & possibly audio/video - except textthese element are not stored in webpage itself, but are loaded into the page by the user browser from the location from the location specified by URI
