One Weakness of the BioA is that it ignores the nurture side of the nature-nurture debate when explaining behaviour
For example the approach sees mantel illness as a result of some kind of chemical imbalance within the body
1 of 6
Example
for example low levels serotonin has been linked to depression
2 of 6
Ignoring the role of the environment on out behaviour is a weakness of the approach...
as it will limit treatments offered. for example depression may be triggered by negative life events meaning counselling may be needed to improve behaviour, however the biological approach would simply focus on providing medication
3 of 6
A further Weakness of BioA is that it ignored individual differences
this approach is nomothetic and so it seeks to make general laws of behaviour by studying groups of individuals through brain scans and lab exp and then applying the findings to the wider population
4 of 6
ignoring individual differences is a weakness of the approach because
not everyone reacts in the same way. for example medication for mental illness maybe effective in reducing symptoms for some individuals, but for others they may experience severe side effects
5 of 6
problem
this raises the question as to whether such research should be generalised.
