What are transverse waves?
The waves oscillate perpendicular (at right angles) to the direction at which the wave is moving. The vibrations move up and down or from side to side.

What are longitudinal waves?
The oscillations are parallel to the direction at which the wave is moving. When an object vibrates it makes the air around it vibrate as it pushes and pulls on the air. These waves compress and refract.

What is a mechanical wave?
A wave that is an oscillation of matter and therefore transfers energy through a medium (particles transfer the matter).

What is an electromagnetic wave?
Carry transverse vibrations in electrical and magnetic fields, not vibrating particles. These waves do not need matter to travel through – they can travel through empty space.
