This is because its a vacuum. This means there are no particles to vibrate.

How does the ear work?
The sound waves cause your eardrum to vibrate. These vibrations are passed onto tiny bones called ossicles, through the semicircular canals and to the cochlea. They turn the vibrations into electrical signals which get sent to your brain.

How do ultrasounds use partial reflection?
When you point a pulse of ultrasound at an object, wherever there are boundaries some of the ultrasound gets reflected back. The time it takes for the reflections to reach a detector can be used to measure how far away the boundary is.

Medical - Checking a pre-natal baby, measure the speed of blood in a vein or artery. Industry - Finding cracks in metal objects such as in aircraft Also by boats to find out the depth of the water or to locate objects in the water.
