Groundwater flow(base flow)
Water flows through rocks towards the river. The rock type can affect the rate of flow.
1 of 18
Groundwater storage
Water is stored in permeable rocks below the surface of the ground.
2 of 18
Precipitation
Water and ice that fall from clouds into the drainage basin. It can take many forms and vary greatly over time and space.
3 of 18
Channel Storage
Water is stored in a river. It is the amount of water stored in a river at a particular instant.
4 of 18
Infiltration
The process by which water enters the soil. The rate can be affected by factors such as soil type, soil saturation and duration of rainfall.
5 of 18
River runoff
The total discharge of water from the drainage basin via its' main river.
6 of 18
Channel flow
Water flows in a river. This is the most efficient means of removing water from a drainage basin
7 of 18
Interception
Precipitation is trapped or stored temporarily on vegetation.
8 of 18
Soil water
Water is stored in the soil.
9 of 18
Throughflow
Water moves horizontally through the soil towards rivers. Normally happens when the soil is completely saturated with water.
10 of 18
Evaporation
Water changes from a liquid to a gas and is returned to the atmosphere. Evaporation is facilitated by energy from the sun.
11 of 18
Overland flow
The movement of water over the surface of the ground to rivers.
12 of 18
Transpiration
Water evaporates from inside vegetation and is returned to the atmosphere. Plants can control the rate of transpiration by opening and closing their stomata.
13 of 18
Groundwater flow
Water flows through rocks towards the river. This is affected by rock type e.g. if the rock is permeable or not.
14 of 18
Percolation
Water drains down through rocks towards the water table. The water table is the upper level of groundwater.
15 of 18
Vegetation storage
Water is stored within plants and trees.
16 of 18
Throughfall and Stemflow
Precipitation drips through vegetation to the ground. Precipitation runs down the stems of plants or trunks of trees to the ground.
17 of 18
Surface storage
The part of precipitation retained at the ground surface.
