WATER - AREAS OF WATER SURPLUS AND DEFICIT

?
What is water security?
- Having a reliable and sustainable source of enough good quality water to meet everyone's needs (industry, agriculture and personal health).
1 of 9
What does water security depend on?
- Amount of water available (e.g. from rainfall, rivers, groundwater etc.). - No. of people who need to use the water. - Accessibility to the water (can be hard if you're poor).
2 of 9
What is water surplus?
- Having more water than is needed.
3 of 9
What is water deficit?
- When there's not enough water to meet people's needs.
4 of 9
What is water insecurity?
- Water deficit can lead to water insecurity. - Water insecurity is when there's not enough clean water to keep everyone healthy, or enable them to make a living (e.g. to water crops, provide energy etc.).
5 of 9
What is water stress?
- When demand for water exceeds supply during a certain period, or when water is not of high enough quality to use.
6 of 9
Global patterns of water surplus and deficit
- Water security will occur in areas with high rainfall and/or very low pop. density (e.g. Canada, Brazil). - Water insecurity will occur in areas with low rainfall and/or high pop. density (e.g. Libya, Mexico).
7 of 9
Why is water consumption rising? - rising pop.
- Global pop. is increasing (each person needs water for drinking, washing, preparing food, etc.). - More people = more food needs to be grown-irrigation for agriculture uses 70% if world's freshwater resources.
8 of 9
Why is water consumption rising? - economic development
-World becoming increasingly developed.-Industralisation (more developed=produces more goods=water used for manufacturing).-Energy production (e.g. water used in cooling thermal power plants).-Wealthier=rising living standards=more toilets etc..
