What does one molecule of water consist of?
one atom of Oxygen, joined with two atoms of H2 by shared electrons
1 of 7
What type of molecule is water?
Polar molecule - Partial negative on one side + partial positive on the other
2 of 7
What makes the molecule water partial negative + partial positive?
1) Shared negative H+ electrons pulled toward O2 atom. other side of H+ atom= slightly positive charge. 2) unshared negative electrons on O2 atom=slight negative charge
3 of 7
Define 'Hydrogen bonding'
Slightly negatively charged O2 atoms attract the slightly Positive charged H+ atoms of over water molecules= gives H20 some of useful properties.
4 of 7
What two useful properties + functions does Hydrogen bonds give water?
1) High specific heat capacity-H+ bonds absorb a lot of energy+a lot of energy needed to heat it up=no rapid temp changes=good habitat. 2)High latent of evaporation-a lot of energy need to break H+ bonds=water great for cooling, cools surface on skin
5 of 7
What two useful properties + functions does polarity give water?
1)Very cohesive-the attraction between molecules of same type=helps water flow+good transporting substance(transpiration stream) 2)Good solvent-slightly positive+ negative= ions will get totally surrounded by water molecule and dissolve.
6 of 7
Is water more or less dense when it's solid?
LESS DENSE. - low temp=water freezes=water molecules held further apart in ice, this is due each H20 molecule forming four H+ bonds to other H20 molecules= lattice shape.-creating an insulation layer for organisms (fish don't freeze).
