Magnitude 5.1 earthquake caused landslide which in turn triggered the eruption.

57 deaths; 250 homes destroyed; 7000 animals died; 230miles squared of trees were flattened

Timber industry destroyed; tourist industry declined; cost of damage to farmers machinery and crops totalled $100 million

Rescuing stranded people; providing shelter for those who lost their homes; giving medical supplies to injured; rescued 198 people.

Removing ash from roads, rebuilding highway, rebuilding homes, dredging river.

Area became very fertile years later, tourist industry grew rapidly once facilities were set up due to geographical interest.

15cm of ash fell causing traffic chaos and airline flights to be cancelled; water produced form melting sno and ice caused mud flows which filled spirit lake and killed 12 million salmon
