What is Vocational education?

A way of preparing young people for work and making education meet the needs of the economy.

What is vocational educational aim?

To improve the basic skills of the workforce to help boast the economy and to end the status division between academic and vocational qualifications.

Why was vocational education brought about?

It was thought that if the work force was well trained the British economy would be more successful.

What has been but in place to help to achieve the aims?

The transition from school to work has been made slightly easier thanks to work experience programmes - Training subjects and courses have been put in place to teach skills and rase awareness of vocational education - More skills introduced by school

What are the criticisms?

Some of the schemes can be seen as boring - They are still seemed to have a lower status - Marxists say its away to pass on capitalist ideologies and to support profit making schemes

Sociologists criticism...

Birdwell et all - suggested that secondary schools neglect those with vocational aspirations and that schools undervalue the skills needed in work.
