Altering a pitch to one that is not the key signature.
1 of 21
Acoustic
A sound that is produced naturally with no additional amplification.
2 of 21
ADSR
Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release.

The controls on an envelope generator that are used shape a sound.
3 of 21
Aliasing
Artefacts created when a frequency has not been correctly recreated by an A/D convertor and back to a D/A convertor.
4 of 21
Ambience
The amount of reverb that sound contains either naturally or from a room or artificially added by an effect.
5 of 21
Amplifier
A piece of equipment used to boost a signal.
6 of 21
Amplitude
The height of a waveform measured from its mean or zero position to its maximum displacement.
7 of 21
Analogue
When a signal or equipment uses a continuously variable physical quantity.
8 of 21
Arpeggiator
A device that automatically plays the individual notes of a chord as an arpeggio/broken chord.
9 of 21
Artefacts
Unwanted sounds created as a by-product during audio processing.
10 of 21
Attack (Dynamics)
The length of time it takes once the threshold is crossed for the processor to apply its process.

EXAMPLE:
When the signal goes above the threshold on a compressor, the attack is amount of time taken to reduce the signal by the amount specified in the ra

Attack (Synthesis)
The length of time it takes between a note being started and the point at which it reaches its peak.

Audio Interface
A device that connects a computer to audio peripherals such microphones, speakers and musical instruments.
13 of 21
Automation
Programming adjustable parameters to operate automatically during playback and mixing.
14 of 21
Auto-Tune
The software that automatically changes the pitch to the nearest absolute pitch.

It can also be used as a creative effect.

Alternatives include Melodyne, FlexPitch, VariAudio.
15 of 21
Aux/Bus
An additional output channel for routing to effects, monitors or as an alternative output.

Can be used as a method of grouping channels.

Often the same as bus channels

Bandwidth (1)

Bandwidth(2)
A range of frequencies.

The amount of data that can be transferred at one time.
18 of 21
Balanced
A connection that has two signals in inversion to one another to reduce noise when put back into phase.
19 of 21
Bit Depth
The number of bits used in each sample in analogue to digital conversion.
20 of 21
Bouncing Down
The process of converting sounds to a new audio file embedding all the processing applied to them.

Normally multiple tracks into fewer tracks but sometimes used to print effects onto an audio track.
