Vitamins
Are essential in life for good growth and health. There are two groups, they include: Fat soluble Vitamins and Water Soluble Vitamins.

Water Soluble Vitamins
Dissolve in water and are excreted in urine everyday because they cannot be stored in the body. Water soluble vitamins include: Vitamin C and Vitamin B group

Fat Soluble Vitamins
Can usually be stored inside the body, in the kidney. Fat Soluble Vitamins include: Vitamin A, D, E,K.

Anti oxidant Vitamins
Help reduce the risk of heart disease and Cancer

Minerals
Minerals help our body to grow, develop and stay healthy. The body uses minerals to perform different functions.

1. Calcium
Important for bones an teeth, blood clotting and enzyme secretion.

2. Phosphorus
Important for the developing of strong bones and teeth.

3. Magnesium
Involved in bone mineralisation and transmission of nerve impulses.

4. Potassium
Helps control the balance of fluids in the body.

5. Zinc
Needed for enzyme function and wound healing.

6. Sodium
Maintains Fluid balance in the body

Needed for the formation of haemoglobin

Helps prevent tooth decay

CALCIUM- Deficiency
If we do not have enough calcium in our food to maintain blood level, then some is used from the bones. A poor intake in calcium means less calcium is deposited which results to lower bone mass and weaker skeleton.

CALCIUM- Osteoporosis
This is the condition of weakness and thinning and is most common in elderly people. Bones fracture and break easily.

CALCIUM- Good sources
Milk and dairy products, Leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds as well as dried fruit and fish.

IRON- Deficiency
This can cause Anemia, which is when the blood has lower number of red blood cells.

Red meat, oily fish, poultry and green leafy vegetables. Cereals and pulses.

Dietary Fibre( NSP)
A non digestible carbohydrate found in plant food.

NSP- Functions
Needed for the digestive system to function properly and may help prevent various bowel disorders. it can also help control body weight.

NSP- Types
Soluble Fibre and Insoluble Fibre

Insoluble Fibre
Absorbs water and increases in bulk. It helps stool become soft and helps keep the gut in good working order.

Insoluble- sources
wholemeal bread/ flour, cereals and brown rice

Soluble Fibre
Slows down digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and helps control blood sugar levels.

Cereals, Porridge oats, beans and lentils as well as peas.
