Important for theory of mind, 'the soul never thinks without a mental image' (De Anima)
1 of 8
What are they?
Short term memory representations that give rise to the experience of seeing with the minds eye, can be imaginery - not limited to visual memories which were actually experienced
2 of 8
Why study Visual Imagery?
Reasoning, memory and learning, creativity, mental practice e.g. atheletes, Brain computer interfaces such as Hex O spell, applications in forensics e.g. false memories
3 of 8
How can it be studied?
1) Scanning 2) Zooming 3) Transformation
4 of 8
Scanning (Kosslyn, 1973)
We can measure the time it takes to do something with mental imagery - linear relationship between item being judged and response time
5 of 8
Zooming (Kosslyn, 1975)
Harder to inspect smaller mental images - shorter response time in larger frame than smaller one
6 of 8
Transformation (Shepard & Metzler, 1972)
Requirement of more response time depending on distance from in plane rotation
7 of 8
Deceptive representations (limitation of how they are studied)
the use of behavioural results to infer the properties and internal structure of mental images. similar pattern of results may arise from non depictive representations
