What is a vertebrate?
A vertebrate is an organism with a skeleton including a backbone.

An invertebrate is an organism without a skeleton or a backbone.

Examples of invertebrates?
Jellyfish etc.

How can scientists further classify vertebrates?
By considering: how the animal takes in oxygen – lungs, gills or through the skin. Thermoregulation – homeotherms or poikilotherms. Reproduction – oviparous or viviparous.

What is a poikilotherm?
An organism whose temperature depends on the surroundings.

What is a homeotherm?
An organism that maintains its own temperature.

What does oviparous mean?
An organism that lays eggs.

What does viviparous mean?
An organism that gives birth to live young.
