1 of 6
What happens when you breath in?
Intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract, thorax volume increases and pressure decreases drawing air in
2 of 6
What happens when you breath out?
ntercostal muscles and diaphragm relax, thorax volume decreases and pressure increases forcing air out
3 of 6
What are ventilators?
Machines that move air into or out of lungs
4 of 6
What did ventilators used to be like?
They were giant cases (iron lung) from the neck to abdomen. Air was pumped out and pressure dropped making the lungs expand and air taken in. Air was pumped in which forced air out. They could changes blood flow in the abdomen.
5 of 6
What are new ventilators like?
They pump air into the lungs, expanding the ribcage and when the pumping stops, the ribcage relaxes pushing air out. It doesnt interfere with blood flow but could cause damage to the lungs if they cant cope with artificial air flow
