Variation (5.1.2)

?
What is discontinuous variation?
Qualitative differences between phenotypes. Organisms fall into clear-cut categories.
1 of 7
What is continuous variation?
Quantitative differences between phenotypes. There are no distinct categories, but a continuous range of values between two extremes.
2 of 7
What is monogenetic inheritence?
Where just one gene is involved in a characteristic.
3 of 7
Give a summary of discontinuous variation.
Different alleles of a single gene have large effects on the phenotype. If several genes are involved, each has quite different effects on the phenotype.
4 of 7
Give a summary of continuous variation.
Characteristics controlled by 2 or more genes. Each gene provides an additive component of the phenotype. A large number of different genes may have a combined effect on the phenotype. These are known as polygenes.
5 of 7
How is there variation in intelligence?
This is partly determined by genes and partly dependent on external stimuli- the learning environment at home and at school, interaction with others etc.
6 of 7
What is the gene pool?
The total genetic information possessed by the reproductive members of a population of organisms.
