1.Within a species= Intraspecific variation. 2.Between species= interspecific variation

What is continuous variation?
Individuals in a population vary within a range. No distinct categories. e.g. height of humans is within a range not just short or tall
3 of 10
What is discontinuous variation?
two or more distinct categories and each individual falls into one of these categories and there are no intermediates e.g. blood group in humans can be A, B, AB or O
4 of 10
What can variation be caused by?
Genetic factors , Environmental factors or both.
5 of 10
How do genetic factors effect variation?
1. different species have different genes. 2. individuals of the same species have the same genes but different alleles which make up their genotype and the differences in genotypes results in variation in phenotype. 4. It is inherited
6 of 10
How do environmental factors effect variation?
1. caused by differences in environment e.g. climate food and lifestyle. 2. they can change over an organisms lifetime 3. include accents and weather people have pierced ears
7 of 10
Give two examples of variation caused by both environmental and genetic factors?
1. Height- genes determine how tall organism can grow but diet and nutrient availability affect *** tall an organism grows. 2. Flagellum- genes determine is microorganism can grow flagellum but some only start to grow in certain environments
8 of 10
What can you use to look for variation between samples?
The mean of each sample
9 of 10
What can you use to look at variation within a sample?
The standard deviation. shows how spread the data is from the mean. larger means larger variaition.
