Vaccinations and antibiotics B6

?
Define pathogen
A microbe that causes infectious disease
1 of 17
What do white blood cells do?
They create antibodies to kill pathogens that enter the body
2 of 17
How do antibodies kill pathogens?
Antibodies stick to the antigens on pathogens, which trigger them to be destroyed
3 of 17
Why can a vaccination not lead to the disease in a person?
They are introduced to small amounts of DEAD and INACTIVE forms of the pathogen
4 of 17
Explain how a vaccine results in protection from disease
When vaccine enters the body, it triggers lymphocytes to produce specific antibodies+ memory cells are also made. When a person is in contact w/ pathogen again, lymphocytes can produce a higher conc of antibodies faster due to mem cells
5 of 17
How do vaccinations protect people later on?
If the same pathogen enters the body, the white blood cells are able to produce the a higher conc of antibodies much faster. This is due to memory cells which remember the pathogen/antibodies
6 of 17
What is herd immunity?
If 1 unvaccinated person is surrounded by many vaccinated people, they will also be protected as the vaccinated people can not pass the pathogen on to the unvaccinated person
7 of 17
What do painkillers do?
They relieve the symptoms of the virus, however they don't kill pathogens/cure you
8 of 17
What are antibiotics?
They can treat most bacterial diseases
9 of 17
What was the first antibiotic discovered?
Penicillin
10 of 17
Who discovered the first antibiotic?
Alexander Fleming
11 of 17
How do antibiotics treat bacterial diseases?
Antibiotics kill infective bacteria inside the body, without harming bodily cells
12 of 17
What is the main problem with antibiotics?
Antibiotic resistance
13 of 17
What is antibiotic resistance?
When certain antibiotics are overused, they are no longer effective against certain bacteria
14 of 17
Why are antibiotics no longer effective once they have been overused?
The bacteria evolved so they were no longer killed by the antibiotic
15 of 17
Fill in the gap:
Doctors always use ________ ___________ to kill certain bacteria
Doctors always use SPECIFIC ANTIBIOTICS to kill certain bacteria
16 of 17
Fill in the gap:
Antibiotics cannot kill _______
Antibiotics cannot kill VIRUSES
