Federal System
All individual states look after their own internal affairs i.e. education and policing. Things concerning ALL states such as war, are handled by Congress

a Set of rules that define how a country should be run. the US constitution relys heavily on the 2 principles of: Separation of Power and a sytem of "Checks and Balances"

The 3 powers are: Executive (The President), Legislative (Congress) and the Judiciary (Supreme Court)

The Roles of the Powers
The Executive power Carries out laws. The Legislative power makes laws and the Judiciary checks that all laws passed by congress are FAIR.

The President of the United States
-Most important power - Elected every 4 years - the Constitution stops him from being too powerful - the Congress and Supreme Court act as a "Watchdog" to ensure this.

U.S Congress
-Made up of the Senate and House of Representatives. - Congress, along with the President, run the country.

Supreme Court
- Consists of Judges, usually experienced Lawyers. - Make sure the Government don't pass unfair laws or abuse their power. - They have the power to say that a law is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. (Could harm the people and/or their rights)
