Republican. Issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. President from 1861-1865.

Republican. Accepted Reconstruction policy. President from 1868-1877.

Republican. Gave a speech in Birmingham in October 1921 stating he wanted blacks to have equal educational opportunities and greater voting rights in the South. However condemned racial mixing and the Great Migration. President from 1921-1923.

Republican. Stated Black Rights were as 'sacred' as anyone else's but was passive. President from 1923-1929.

Republican. Tried to appoint a racist Supreme Court Judge but was successfully stopped by the NAACP. President from 1929-1933.

Franklin D. Roosevelt
Democrat. Used the New Deal to help blacks during the Great Depression by desegregating federal employment and setting up the Fair Employment Commission, but the New Deal was not too effective. Wife, Eleanor supported blacks. President from 1933-1945

Democrat. Used Executive Order 9981 to desegregate the US military and commissioned a President's Committee on Civil Rights, but made no legislations. President from 1945-1953.

Republican. Helped in Little Rock. Did not favour aggressive action, failed to take initiative after the Brown case, passive. President from 1953-1961.
