Gender Schema
The mental building block of knowledge that contains information about each gender.

Gender Stereotype
Males and females are seen as being similar. Some people's gender schema's are made up of gender stereotypes. E.g builders are male.

Highly Gender Schematised
When gender is very important and information is organised according to gender appropriate and inappropriate roles.

Observation
Watching the behaviour of a role model.

Imitation
Copying the behaviour of others.

Vicarious Reinforcement
When a role model is praised or rewarded for their behaviour, the child is more likely to copy them.

Phallic Stage
The stage that gender development takes place.

Identification
To adopt the attitudes and behviour of the same-sex parent.

Oedipus Complex
A boy unconciously desires his mother and fears his father.

Electra Complex
A girl unconciously desires her father and is afraid of losing her mother's love.

Gender Disturbance
Not developing the gender identity usually associated with one's sex.

Modelling
A role model provides an example for the child.

Sex Identity
A child's sex can be identified by their hormones and chromsomes. This detrmines the child's sex.

A child's gender can be identified by their attitudes and behaviour.
