Name all the features of a HYDROLOGICAL CYCLE?
Ground water, lakes and streams, evaporation Transpiration, water vapor, Rain ad Snow (Precipitation), Infiltration
1 of 11
Why is the hydrological cycle a closed system?
A finite amount of water going round and round. None is lost or gained
2 of 11
What are STORES?
Rocks (can be stored for hundreds of years), soil, lakes, oceans, (97% water stored BUT too salty to use) glaciers, rocks/lakes/soil hold relatively small amounts of fresh water - high in demand for sources of water
3 of 11
Name the ways water can flow/transfer?
Surface runoff, through flow, groundwater flow, infiltration, precipitation
4 of 11
What is meant by the term 'WATER STRESS'?
when demand is greater than supply or when it is not of good enough quality to use. Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are teh most water stressed countries in the world -> they use huge quantities for irrigating cotton crops
5 of 11
Why is their a decline in water availability/quality?
Population growth, Agricultural demand, Urbanization, Energy - reservoir storage for HEP = Lost through evaporation, Industrial development, Climate change = rain less reliable in some places, Tourism = hotels, golf courses = huge amounts of water
6 of 11
What does the term PHYSICAL WATER SCARCITY?
SW USA, Central Asia - Demand, Availability
7 of 11
What does the term ECONOMIC WATER SCARCITY?
Sub Saharan Africa - Supply available but people can't afford to exploit them/ Lack of money to build storage facilities or distribute water
8 of 11
Name some sources of water pollution?
Salt runoff, sewage, Runoff from building sites, Disposal of hazardous waste, Cattle waste (slurry), Fertilizers washed in, Crop spraying, Chemicals applied to golf to golf courses, Industrial discharge
9 of 11
What types of countries have the highest level of pollution?
Developing countries - like China/India = They put economic growth before environmental protection, rapidly growing cities means slums -> streams = badly polluted as no sewage systems in place, Chemicals added to crops = runoff
10 of 11
What steps have other countries taken to protect the environment
Developed counties - UK, Japan
