What is lean production?
Lean production originated from Japan. Is where all employees are involved in putting into operation a series of working practices that will help the business to meet the demands of the consumer in an efficient and effective manner.

Time-based competition, describe what it is.
This is an attempt o reduce the time taken between the generation of the idea for a product and it going into production. This can be speed-ed up by the use of technology.

Total quality management, define what it is.
This considers the efficient usage of all the resources used within the production process. All employees are responsible for the well-being of the business.

What is Jidoka?
This is the process for building into the production process an ability to detect and reject faulty goods and components at the earliest possible moment in the production of a good.

What is Kaizen?
Ongoing/continuous improvements.

What are quality and quality circles?
To complement the Kaizen approach, some manufacturers have adopted quality circles. This is a voluntary scheme of employees, are allowed to meet in working hours to discuss problems related to their working environment.

What is just-in-time? (JIT)
A method where stock levels are low in order to reduce the amount of space required for storing stock.

What is Kanban?
In order to operate JIT, a kanban system needs to operate. A Kanban system helps to organise the flow of components onto the production line at the right place at the right time.

What is cell production?
Cell production is a form of teamwork. Employees are placed in different teams, with each team responsible for a particular part of the production process.

What is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics looks at the relationship between the employee and the capital equipment being used.
