What is quality?
Quality is concerned with: the design of the product, the reliability of the product, ensuring that the product is properly checked while in production and not completed.

What is meant by 'being fit for purpose'?
Quality includes making sure a product does what it is meant to and is safe to use.

What is the satisfying legislation?
Legislation is passed which sets the standard for certain products.

Why is quality important?
Quality has become important because customers expect to have a standard of quality, and not as an additional extra.

What is quality assurance?
Quality assurance is concerned with the way in which a business sets out its procedures to assure its consumers that the products produced are of the right quality.

What are some costs of inspections?
Installing procedures to improve quality, Time taken to check and inspect, Employing people to inspect, or requiring employees to use part of their time to inspect instead of producing.

What are some costs of rejects/returns?
Wasted materials, cost of repairing, production losses to rectify faults, damage to reputation of the business and loss of sales.

What is TQM?
The word 'total' is the significant factor, as it is an essential part of this practice that all employees are responsible for the well-being of a business and not just those that produce the product.

What is benchmarking?
Benchmarking is when a business compares their product with that of a competitor that is usually the market leader, in order to improve its own practises.

What are some types of benchmarking?
External, Internal, Competitive, Functional, Strategic benchmarking.

What are some limitations of benchmarking?
Limited access to sensitive material. - Difficult to find which business offers 'best practice' - Difficult for a business to implement improvements to reduce gaps between itself and 'best practice business.

What is Kaizen?
This is attempting to gain 'continuous improvements'.

What are quality circles?
Are voluntary groups of employees that meet within the working day to consider problems affecting their work. (Established in 1962)

What is meant by Zero defects?
By applying the concept zero defects, a business should be able to benefit from an improvement in quality and therefore a reduction in costs, as less defects equals less waste.
