The nervous system can be split into 2 parts, what are they?
The central nervous system (CNS) and the the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
1 of 16
What two components make up the CNS?
The brain and the spinal cord
2 of 16
What makes up this PNS?
The nerves which radiate from the CNS
3 of 16
The PNS can be split into 2 parts, what are they?
The somatic nervous system (mostly voluntary) and the autonomic nervous system (mostly involuntary)
4 of 16
The autonomic nervous system can be split into 2 parts, what are they?
The sympathetic system and the parasympathetic system
5 of 16
What does the sympathetic system do?
It prepares the body for action
6 of 16
What does the parasympathetic system to?
It returns the body to a normal state
7 of 16
Give an example for an effector
Muscles and glands
8 of 16
What do afferent neurones do?
They carry nerve impulses to the CNS
9 of 16
What do efferent neurones do?
They carry nerve impulses away from the CNS
10 of 16
What does the somatic nervous system do?
It controls the body's skeletal muscle. It is responsible for the reflex arc but is mostly responsible for voluntary actions
11 of 16
What is the simplest action of the nervous system?
The reflex arc
12 of 16
Give an example of a reflex action
Pulling your hand away from something hot/sneezing/swallowing
13 of 16
Explain how reflex actions work
A sensory neurone detects a signal from a receptor, then a relay fibre acts as a link to the motor neurone, which sends signals to the effectors
14 of 16
What internal structures and organs does the autonomic nervous system regulate?
The heart, blood vessels, bronchial tube, alimentary canal and sweat glands
15 of 16
The sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are described as being "antagonistic" what does antagonistic mean?
It means they have opposite effects on the same organss
